This will always be my favorite MLK photo. I love it for two reasons. It first caught my eye because I’m a piano geek, and I started playing when I was about the age Yolanda King was in the photo. The more important reason is a fair bit of history nerditude so bear with me. I haven’t found an exact date for this photo, but there is a fairly well known series of photos from April 1960, taken just after the Klan burned a cross (one of many) on the Kings’ front lawn. This photo is very similar to the April 1960 set. The thought that this sweet moment was captured by a photographer sent to cover a hateful act reminds me that families were subjected to - no, targeted by - such ugliness. And while I hope we take today to remember the full breadth of MLK’s work in civil rights, in fighting poverty, in his anti-war statements, I want to be mindful of the sacrifice of the very real young family in this photo, too.
